Root
#clear-expectations
Data Scientist
About the Company
Root Insurance is the world's first mobile-only, usage-based-insurance-only car insurance company! Located in Columbus, Ohio, Root was founded in 2015 with the goal of solving the following problem: good drivers pay FAR too much for car insurance. If the sensors in your smartphone prove to us that you are a safe driver, then we will give you an unbeatable price, which we can afford to do since we don't sell insurance to dangerous drivers. Other guiding principles at Root are the improvement of UX via extensive testing, and the achievement of efficiency through modern technology and paradigms. Root currently has around 300 employees, but we are growing very rapidly! Root is an exciting, happy, inclusive place to work, where you are free to be yourself. Employment at Root includes a competitive benefits package including a flexible vacation policy, a 401K with partial company match, paid health insurance for the employee, etc. Root has raised almost $200 million in venture capital funding to date, and we recently closed our Series D, raising $100 million in capital at a $1 billion valuation in August 2018.

The Job:
Root is seeking a data scientist to help our team add business value by leveraging vast quantities of data and building more accurate predictive models. Examples of some of the rich data sources we work with include smartphone telematics sensor data, marketing campaign results, and unstructured data from claims notes, phone calls, etc. The ideal candidate will have experience putting well-defined parameters around potentially ambiguous problems, evaluating success based on business-important criteria, and applying modern machine learning techniques to large datasets. This may include querying/scraping/otherwise procuring datasets, cleaning/munging, signal processing, feature engineering, model choice/evaluation, and validation using reproducible methods and scalable architecture. Particular attention will also be paid to the interface between R&D environments and productionizing models. Furthermore, the candidate will need the ability to learn new tools on the fly and be adaptable to changing requirements.

Key Problems Include:
- Mining text data for use in classification / predicting business outcomes.

Element AI
#culture#benefits
Software Developer - Human Computer Interaction
  • How does touching information feel?
  • Does data have a face, and if so, what does it look like?
  • Can you sense anomalies in your production line as you would a disturbance in the Force?
  • How do you configure an AI system without explicitly configuring it, but instead letting it get to know you, and the way you work?
  • When do you delegate tasks to AI, and when do you jump back in?

Ultimately, how does our work evolve in collaboration with AI in the most natural and ethical way?

These are some of the questions you’ll ponder as a Technical Lead on the Human-AI Interaction (HAII) team at Element AI. In fact, you’ll do more than ponder: your mission will be to find the answers through rapid experimentation. You’ll explore the best ways for human-AI teams to work together, alongside a small crew of awesome, super-committed people from diverse backgrounds.

We’re looking for

You are a neophile; you love trying and learning new things. You are creative and love the challenge of finding deeply different approaches and framings to novel problems, you don't just apply existing patterns. You are driven by shared vision and values more than process.

You are able to hold dichotomies in your head comfortably - for example, you can be both afraid and un-afraid of taking risks. You aren’t nervous about breaking stuff, though you do it with intention and care. You are both autonomous and collaborative. Making mistakes doesn’t make you apprehensive - you know that it’s the fastest way to learning, so long as it causes no harm.

Oh, and speaking of comfort - you eat it for breakfast, and go on to swim in uncertainty for the rest of the day. Comfortably.

What you’ll do

Experience and self-sufficiency are important. You’ll probably work in Python, or maybe Go, but what really matters are the outcomes. We’re looking for people who are more interested in defining exactly how to get things done rather than being handed a to-do list. You’ll help our team implement experiments one day, and work on plumbing things together the next. You will discover and/or come up with new ways to creatively solve data problems. In a pinch, you’ll implement “programmer art” user interfaces. In short, you’ll help us move forward to value in the best way that you possibly can, without ego.

A few months after you’ve joined the team, we could very well be delivering a prototype combining machine learning, speech- and video- recognition, brain-computer interfaces, and natural user experience design, that we will test with a small group of internal users. They’ll love it because it will make their complex jobs more manageable. Exactly what problem will this prototype solve? We have a lot of ideas, but don’t worry - you’ll be key to figuring that out once you join.

Eventually, you’ll add technical team members to our crew to increase experiment velocity. But first, you’ll get your hands very (very!) dirty.

What we offer for your valuable work

  • Highly dynamic, innovative, passionate, entrepreneurial team;
  • Open and inclusive company culture;
  • Worldwide competitive salary;
  • Participation in the company success through the Employee Stock Option Plan;
  • Flexible hours (outside of core hours);
  • Autonomous, self-managed Agile teams.

What is Element AI

Element AI is one of the world’s largest applied artificial intelligence companies and one of Canada’s fastest growing startups. We constantly push the frontier of knowledge, tackling the world's biggest and most interesting challenges in artificial intelligence, machine learning and operations research.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Engineering Manager - Infrastructure

Lead the teams building Slack's infrastructure.

Background

Slack enables people all over the world to communicate and collaborate together. Teams of all scales — from the world’s largest public companies to the smallest of startups — use Slack to get work done, so we take performance and reliability very seriously. A taste of our scale:

  • The average user spends over 10 hours connected and 2.5 hours active in Slack every single day
  • 1.5 billion messages are sent per month, half of those outside the United States
  • Every day we see over 3.5 million simultaneously connected users, over a billion web requests, and 10s of billions of database queries.

For millions of people, Slack is the primary communication tool they use at work all day long. They expect it to be exceptionally reliable and fast, all the time.

Infrastructure at Slack

We operate at tremendous scale with systems that process millions of events per second. Our team maintains and builds the lower levels of our stack, including:

  • Edge services
  • Real-time messaging
  • Asynchronous background job processing

We know we’ve done our job correctly when none of our users think about us. We don’t typically ship new user-facing features, but rather ensure our systems are incredibly performant, highly available, reliable, resilient, and scalable. In other words, Slack just works seamlessly.

Slack's API and web backend is built on PHP/Hack, and our backend services are written in Java and Go. Our data infrastructure is built on Kafka, Hadoop, Hive, Presto, Spark, and MySQL. Our Chief Architect, Keith Adams, spoke about our architecture at QCon in 2016.

Our Team

We are looking for an engineering manager to lead the Infrastructure team. You will report to the Director of Core Infrastructure Engineering and will work closely with other managers in Infrastructure and Service Engineering.

We are a small team making a large impact. We rapidly iterate and work closely with other teams in engineering to ensure we build resilient systems that can scale. We have a strong commitment to quality and understand that simplicity and reliability should be primary aspects of the systems that we build. We are scrappy, independent, and pragmatic. Infrastructure is a diverse and inclusive team that treats their colleagues exceptionally well.

What you should have

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience.
  • You have 5+ years of engineering management experience leading productive, high functioning teams. You can describe why these teams were high functioning and what you specifically did to ensure engineers felt productive.
  • You are a very strong verbal and nonverbal communicator. You’re excited to explain complex technical concepts and share your knowledge with diverse audiences both internally and externally.
  • You can contemplate several, and often conflicting, constraints and make rapid decisions.
  • You can anticipate future technical needs for the product and craft plans to realize them.
  • You excel at building roadmaps and can develop a long-term team vision in partnership with other engineering teams at Slack. You can then be accountable for driving project execution.
  • You love helping engineers develop new skills and advance in their careers. You don’t shy away from performance conversations and you recognize the relationship between objective feedback and career growth.

Please include with your application:

  • Why you’re excited about being an engineering manager at Slack
  • How you approach engineering management
  • A brief description of the team you’re most proud of managing, and your role in helping it succeed

We look forward to working with you!

Signal Sciences
#day-to-day-work summary
Product Designer

About Us

Signal Sciences empowers security and engineering teams by providing visible and effective web application security protecting against real-world attacks. With our unique hybrid on-premise and cloud architecture, we process, protect and report on billions of requests per day for some of the most sophisticated companies in the world ranging from Adobe to Vimeo, Taser to Under Armour. Our goal is making a more secure Web, with tools that people love to use, written by people who love to make them.

About the role

Product designers at Signal Sciences work across all four layers of design (outcomes, structure, interaction, visual). You’ll get to think strategically about how to make security problems visible and actionable for our customers, while simultaneously working at the feature level to design interfaces and interactions that add up to a powerful, cohesive and delightful experience.

While all product designers at Signal Sciences are expected to carry a project from research to polished final product, you will have primary responsibility for defining product screens and flows that map to our users’ core tasks, as well as the supporting IA and structure of our application - a meaningful but focused problem space. Questions you’ll get get to come in and tackle every day include:

  • How do we onboard new users and make the value of the product evident?
  • How might our tool help bridge gaps between security teams, DevOps, and software engineering?
  • What are the core task flows our product needs to enable, and what structures do we need to design in order to support these journeys?
  • How do we use design to transform complex datasets into insights?
  • How do we design interactions and flows that allow users to act on insights to protect their applications and respond to attacks?
  • How do we measure the impact of changes to our product’s design?

About you

You should have interest and some experience with all the different facets of product design, from UX research and interaction design to visual design and prototyping. However, we are looking for someone who is strong at distilling complexity at the feature level - a designer who thinks beyond pixels and across touch points to create features that are valuable. The right designer for this role will:

  • Be an accomplished UX designer who can solve challenging user experience problems with simple, empathetic solutions.
  • Have experience solving tough interaction problems and thinking through the challenges that come with structuring a large, complex application.
  • Conduct user research to uncover tasks, model information, navigation and flows using UX
  • Be a strategic thinker who works hard to correctly frame tough problems, thereby setting teams up to deliver successful solutions.
  • Demonstrate the ability to design polished user interfaces and interactions. While you will often be working to solve high-level problems, you have great taste and a solid understanding of color, typography, motion and visual hierarchy.
  • Use systems thinking to deliver design at scale, rather than creating one-off solutions.
  • Have a deep understanding of the materials and constraints of the web. While this role may not contribute production code, you should be familiar with modern front-end engineering tools and practices.
  • Embrace a highly iterative design process. We value teammates who are highly adaptive and great listeners. You must be adept at giving and receiving critiques in a collaborative environment.

The details

  • This position is part of the Product Design team
  • This is an individual contributor role (not people management)
  • Located in Los Angeles
  • Suitable for mid- and senior-level designers

Product Engineer

The world’s first customer platform helping internet businesses accelerate growth☝️

Intercom builds a suite of messaging-first products that all modern internet businesses can use to accelerate growth across the customer lifecycle, from acquisition, to engagement, and support. Today more than 25,000 businesses, including New Relic, Sotheby’s and Shopify, use Intercom to connect with a billion unique people worldwide.

Intercom is a deeply creative company with the confidence to believe it can fundamentally change the future of internet business. Our people are incredibly ambitious, yet humble. Warm, accepting, and positive. Whether you build, market, sell or support product, we want you to make your mark with us.

What's the opportunity? 🤔

At Intercom, you will be a product engineer - someone who solves real customer problems through a smart and efficient application of your technical knowledge and your tools. You’ll be part of one of our multidisciplinary product teams, where you will build both back-end and front-end systems, and work closely with designers, product managers, researchers, and data analysts.

Our growth rate is faster than almost every other Saas company, ever and we’ve recently announced a $125 million Series D investment round. We’re facing many exciting scaling challenges and we’re building a robust platform where your expertise can be applied to areas such as building a beautiful messenger composer, rule matching, deliverability, security, app availability and machine learning, to name a few.

What will I be doing? 🚀

As an experienced engineer you will:

  • Develop technical plans and contribute to our technical architecture as we scale our products to serve tens of millions of people every day.
  • Write Ruby code, which knits together a lot of AWS, infrastructure, platform and SaaS technologies that form the core of Intercom’s backend infrastructure
  • Ship a change to production on your first day and a feature in your first week. That “day one” change is automatically deployed to production along with 100 other deployments (on average) each weekday
  • Grow your team’s capacity by mentoring other engineers and interviewing candidates. This is a chance to be an integral part of building and growing a team.

What skills do I need? 📖

  • 5+ years of industry experience in a software engineering role, preferably building a SaaS product. You can demonstrate significant impact that your work has had on the product and/or the team.
  • Deep knowledge of a high-level programming language (for example, Ruby, Python, Perl etc.) but it doesn’t need to be a language that we use here! Great people are effective and learn what we use quickly (or introduce us to better ways of working)
  • Experience collaborating directly with product teams and designers, and a proven track record of delivering value to customers or users. Engineers at Intercom are pragmatists who work closely with others on cross-disciplinary teams
  • Experience with Distributed systems

What happens when I apply? 🤓

First, apply so we can review your CV :) As the next step, we will send you our take-home test to work on in your own time. You can find more details on the questions and how we evaluate answers here. The following step will be a phone interview with one of our engineers which will focus on technical and culture contribution questions (this step is sometimes broken down into 2 interviews). The final step is an onsite interview in our Dublin office (we can help with travel arrangements, visas etc.).

Benefits 😍

We are a well treated bunch, with awesome benefits! If there’s something important to you that’s not on this list, talk to us! :)

  • Competitive salary and equity in a fast-growing start-up
  • We serve lunch and dinner every weekday, plus a variety of snack foods and a fully stocked kitchen
